I’ve always wondered why so many visitors to Leith only pay a fleeting visit, before jumping on the bus back to Edinburgh’s city centre.
And I’m not the only one who’s wondering what can be done. Gordon Milne, who almost single handedly raised funds for the new Merchant Navy Memorial (pictured above), has been the driving force behind the creation of a working group to develop the Leith brand.
Several meetings have been held so far and numerous, excellent ideas have been suggested including:
Encouraging coach tours to visit Britannia, and then go on to see some of Leith’s other attractions, such as Trinity House.
Improving and upgrading signage to help encourage visitors to explore Leith.
Using empty shop space to create a Visitor’s Centre in the heart of Leith, which will create a focal point for people coming to the area.
Making our rich heritage come alive through plaques on our buildings, which will let visitors know about Leith’s important history.
It’s great to see such enthusiasm for the project. I know that already there are many groups doing their best to improve our community. Along with the enthusiasm and knowledge that Gordon Milne has, I’m sure we will make Leith a better place to live and to visit.
