Lothian & Borders Fire & Rescue Service recently gave a graphic account of the role played by alcohol in a number of housefires in Leith.
Subsequently, the Leith Neighbourhood Partnership looked into circulating information on the most vulnerable citizens in Leith to the Fire Board, to help prevent accidents.
According to the Fire Service statistics, there were 15 alcohol-related fires in Leith in 2010/11, most of which were attributable to smoking materials or hotplates. Only 28% of properties where someone died had a working smoke detector.
The Fire & Rescue service has an excellent website offering lots of information and advice on fire safety, and I urge everyone to check it out at www.lothian.fire-uk.org
