Shore Improvements On Target

With the help of the Heritage Lottery Fund and Historic Scotland, the project to reduce traffic on the South Shore and improve the environment is well underway. I recently raised the matter at Full Council, following representation from local groups and owners living close to the Shore. The extensive consultation that followed and the resulting support has been very positive. The pavement will be widened, fencing [...]

Improving Leith & The Waterfront

At the Policy and Strategy Committee of the Council in November, it was agreed that funding would be given to two important projects. The first is the link road from Seafield to Constitution Street, which will provide improved connectivity with the port, and provide environmental benefits by reducing traffic and protecting the historic heart of Leith. The other project [...]

Leith Hospital Memories

I spent a lovely Friday afternoon in a packed South Leith Church Hall with many people who had worked at Leith Hospital, or been patients there. We had gathered to watch a one-act play set in the hospital in the 1960s. This is really [...]

The project was undertaken through the Leith Townscape Heritage Initiative, and financed through the National Lottery, along with funding from Historic Scotland, [...]

Leith Neighbourhood Partnership at Leith Library

Leith Neighbourhood Partnership recently moved into its new home in the Leith Library on Ferry Road. Over the past few months, the building has been undergoing a bit of a makeover – and what a difference a few months can make! Not only has the building been re-painted and re-carpeted, but the cupula has also [...]

Fort House Demolition

The gradual re-housing of residents at Fort House is continuing and there are very few tenants still remaining. This final decanting has taken time in order that residents can find suitable accommodation in an area that suits them, and where the properties have the required number of rooms. It is hoped that all families will [...]

Biomass Update

The Biomass planning application has been delayed for at least a further six months. What that means for the long term is anyone’s guess, but we should certainly not drop our guard. It’s not clear how the change in ownership will affect the plan as a whole. The new company could even take an entirely [...]
